Steve & San had beautiful wedding during the Easter weekend. We couldn’t have asked for better weather. Tyler and I had so much fun working with Steve & San. Their reception was especially fun with all the performances.

Mad Men by Sohal Photography

A few months ago, I told Alice I wanted to do a personal project but was having difficulty coming up with a theme. We were initially discussing about a theme based on a time period, such as the 50′s or 60′s, but also wanted something more specific. Since I love watching Mad Men so much, Alice suggested a Mad Men themed photo shoot. This would incorporate the 50′s/60′s time period and also include details related to Mad Men. I knew this shoot would be a very big project because there were so many elements involved and wedding season is in full swing. I initially talked to Stephanie from Balconi Flowers about the idea, and she was very excited about it. She also recommended some vendors who helped make this shoot possible. This project started with me thinking of doing something small, but it ended up being everyone’s project. It took a while to decide on the location for this shoot. The location had to match our theme as well as be within our budget. In the end, we decided Cecil Green would be perfect, and John at Cecil Green was very accommodating with early arrival of the furniture and props for the shoot. We really love the venue.

Fortune Events was instrumental in organizing the shoot. As I storyboarded my ideas, Julia and Francis helped them come to life. They gave everyone a detailed itinerary down to the minute and also contacted vendors and models for the shoot. The day went smoothly because of them. Our day started with Shannon and Harp of Pink Orchid working their magic on our four models. They arrived with a perfect vision with how our models should look for this shoot. While the models were getting ready, Lonsdale Event Rentals dropped off tables, chairs, linens, and plate settings. The Chivari chairs were gorgeous! By the time we arrived at Cecil Green, Ganache Patisserie had also already dropped of a cake! The first time I met Peter was for my own wedding. At that time, Alice and I were looking for a Parisian-style cake for our Paris-themed wedding. Peter designed a perfect cake for Alice and I. For the Mad Men shoot, I casually mentioned to Julia about the possibility of having Ganache providing a cake for the shoot. Julia contacted Peter, and I was so excited to hear that Peter was able to join us in this project and shared his creativity for this shoot.

As everything was being setup, our models got dressed into their bridal gowns from Bisou Bridal. Bisou provided two gowns: a tea length silk dupioni dress by Lillen Collection and a lace sheath bridal gown by Augusta Jones. They also provided us with Oscar De Le Renta shoes which went perfectly with our theme! Cindy from High Heel Obsession also had some amazing designer shoes she allowed us to choose from.

Stephanie from Balconi was helping us put together this shoot from the very beginning. Without her support this would not have been possible. Alice and I fell in love with Stephanie’s work after a friend of ours recommended her for our wedding. She came up with the perfect arrangement for our shoot and we could not be happier.

Blue Lotus Productions provided me with some awesome footage from the shoot to work with. I always enjoy working them, it seems we understand each others visions completely.

Of course for any shoot you need awesome models. I have to thank Keely, Riun, Jaime and Priya for working with us. You guys were patient and totally allowed our vision to come to life.

In the early stages on planning it’s always nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of. Alice, thank you for all your support. I know I probably drove you crazy at times. Kam thank you for being there every step of the way. You truly are awesome and I can count on you for anything. I can’t wait do another project with you guys!

One of the reasons why I love personal projects is because it gives me time to experiment and to go beyond my comfort zone. This is not always possible on a hectic wedding day. I’m excited to share my images and video below.

Garry & Ashley’s Engagement Session – Vancouver Wedding Photographer

Back in the day I used to work with Garry at Canadian Tire on Hastings. We always had a riot together. You could find us behind the parts counter or chasing down shop lifters on Hastings St…never a dull moment.

It had a been a long time since I had seen Garry so I was really excited when he asked me to photograph his wedding. Ashley and Garry really are a sweet couple and knowing Garry I’m sure his wedding will be so much fun…looking forward to it!

Jen’s Maternity Session – Sohal Photography

Jen is a good friend of ours and since I love doing photography for friends I was honored and excited when Jen asked me to do a session for her. She’s expecting a baby girl and could not be more excited.

With my trusty helpers Alice and Kam we spent the afternoon capturing some great portraits of Jen, Anthony and of course their dog Barney. Jen was great to work with. She was comfortable with everything we had in mind for the session.

Los Angeles, Las Vegas & WPPI

This blog post is long over due, but better late than never!

In February Alice and I went to LA to soak up the sun, catch up with friends and then head to Las Vegas for WPPI.

LA was just perfect. The weather reminded of a Vancouver Summer at its best. We had the chance to catch up with a lot of people I had not seen in a long time. We were lucky to be able to stay with Alice’s aunt in Burbank so we were never too far from anyone. We spent a few days with our good friends Anwar and Marlo. It was nice seeing their excitement with their baby coming in just a few months!

WPPI was an awesome learning experience again this year. I was able to spend a lot more time at the print judging competition this year. Alice was so accurate at predicting scores, it was fun to watch! Alice has a great eye with so many avenues in the photography business, it helped so much having her along. Being surrounded by such driven an inspirational people definitely provides motivation to help me carry out my own goals. My “to do” list after WPPI always gets insanely long….lol

Baby Aydin – Vancouver Newborn Photographer

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing Aydin. Aydin is just over a month old and was a dream to work with. I loved all the faces he made when he was awake, it made for a great session. Thank you to Harprit and Yash for letting us capture some cute photos of your baby boy!

Monica & Raj’s Engagement Session – Vancouver Wedding Photographer

We headed up Mt Seymour with Monica & Raj to photographer their engagement session. I was excited to go as it was something a little different and I knew we would get some amazing shots. Other than the freezing cold we all had a lot of fun. Raj even surprised Monica by dropping down on one knee which made for a really sweet moment. It was a blast watching the two of them play in the snow as we rushed back to the car to warm up.

We finished off the shoot at a slightly warmer location, Capilano Suspension Bridge.

Monica & Matt’s Wedding – Vancouver Wedding Photographer
